May 2, 2007 Abstract A number of key new computing system initiatives—including Windows Vista™ ReadyBoost™ and Windows ReadyDrive™ technologies—exploit the performance, economy, power efficiency, and high reliability of NAND Flash memory. System designers implementing NAND Flash-based traditional hard disk drives (HDDs) or newer hybrid hard drives (HHDs) and solid state disks (SSDs) face a number of decisions. This paper explains the trade-offs associated with available disk caching methods, the differences between various types of Flash memory, and the advantages that NAND offers when superior performance is critically important. This information applies for the Windows Vista operating system.
